Boswell's Bexley

In 1968, Bexley Council saved Arthur Boswell’s collection of historic photographs of Bexley from the skip. After much negotiation, it bought the Boswell Collections consisting of around 20,000 lantern slides, negatives and prints for £350.

The book tells the fascinating story of Arthur Boswell’s life and his work recording all aspects of life in and around Bexley from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century.

“Boswell’s Bexley” includes carefully selected images from the Archives and Museum Boswell Collections. The images capture the transformation of the borough from a largely rural district in the 1890s to becoming a bustling suburb by the 1950s.
